I came from a small town where agriculture was the big thing so anybody who could program a VCR was considered a pseudo IT professional. At the time I had a fleeting understanding of computers from playing games like AOE2 on a Pentium 3 PC. Doing basic tasks like zipping files, burning to CD, juggling zip or floppy disk, just to make space on my 20 GB HDD before defragging for 2 hours. I still remember huddling up in the library with my friends to “Yahoo” funny things or window shopping on tiger direct.
Back in 2007 I took a class at the local vocational school. I learned really quick that technology was more than fiddling with basic settings. The introductory class taught me how to clone HDD’s using Clonezilla, recover windows 2K and XP, and how to properly install hardware with an ESD mat/wrist strap. I learned about command line tools which led to my obsession with portableapps.com and pendrive Linux.
It’s been a journey but there’s still so much more to learn. I just wanted to show off these bad boys before they’re gone. They’ve been in a CD case for the better part of 15 years now and I don’t know how much longer they will hold up. It’s not worth making copies but they’re still a neat part of tech history.
Just to get this off my chest. Arguably, Ubuntu 22.04 is slow and bloated compared its 7.10 counterpart but… we also have 10+core CPU’s. Gen 13 intel processors are absolute space heaters, especially in the new MacBook’s. And, Athlon CPU’s changed the overclocking industry and it’s never been as good.
